The Buried Echoes[/c]

I'm starting to understand this will never be simple.

An undead, crossed tonight in a fight that nearly went wrong, carried something. The ankh reacted before I even struck it - as if it knew, before I did.

A foreign, almost pleading female voice:
"I am the one the water forgot. But my memory is rising."

A violent vision, too fast to fully grasp - a capsizing boat, a figure sinking, a black fragment clutched in a hand that wouldn't let go, even underwater.

When it all stopped, I had a black pebble in my pocket that I hadn't picked up.
"What sinks does not die. It waits."

It vibrates, this pebble. Quietly, but without rest, like a pulse too slow to be natural.

Three days later, another encounter - and this time, I thought I wouldn't make it. The undead didn't fall like the others. It took three strikes before it finally collapsed, and when it did, a red light came out of it, faint like an ember someone struggles to keep alive:
"I kept the flame until the very end. But what burns goes out."

I picked up a vitrified fragment where it fell. A black, rough stone, cold despite its name.

I'm no longer afraid of these creatures like before. I seek them out now. I watch for them.
Because every time, somewhere inside them, there might be a word Kael wanted me to hear.
