"There came a time when graves were no longer mere places of memory. They became thresholds. And those waiting beyond... began walking toward the here."

Memory, summoned too often through writing and glyphs, grows corrupted. What the Echo-Bearers awakened was no longer quite what had been lost.
Some Breaths returned without form or name, swollen with fragments of other dead. They were called the Nameless Ones. They no longer answered to anything - not prayers, not silence, not dust offered up.

"The slab had moved on its own. Beneath it, a voice spoke, but it did not come from the hole. It came from inside me."

The Silent Engravers chained glyph after glyph. But the more they wrote, the more the language twisted. It was during this period that the screaming tombs were born - places where the trapped Breath no longer had any memory to pass on, only the pain of having been summoned too often.

An anonymous scribe forged an inverted key from a shard of cracked ankh, attempting to "reopen what no longer wished to speak."
He was found dead, his lips naturally sewn shut, his headstone melted beneath him.

"They thought they could bind the dead. But it was they who became bound."

Meanwhile, in the most remote corners, a few Echo-Bearers had returned to the old gesture - the one from before writing, the one only ever passed on by showing, never by writing it down.
Those ones created no Nameless Ones. They simply remained as silhouettes the undead no longer seemed to see.
