Those the Watchers Regretted[/c]

"Sometimes one must forget those who were allowed to listen too long. Even stones, from whispering too much, can become dangerous."

This was the end of the bound words. Those who had carved their names into stone began to forget their own identities. The glyphs changed on their own. The grave dust, used for writing, no longer answered.

A stele was found in a nameless desert, bearing no symbol at all. Travelers who approached it claimed to no longer remember why they had come.

The Scriptorium attempted to compile what could be saved. The soul vessels were sealed in black lead. The ash rituals were forbidden.

But one gesture alone survived the purge, because it had never written, carved, or bound anything: the rite of the first Echo-Bearers.

The Watchers intervened. They overturned the steles, erased the glyphs, reduced the oldest tombs to ash. They closed the Forgotten Scriptorium.

"It takes centuries to build a silence. It takes only one name carved wrong to make it scream."

But they let the silent rite survive. Because it asked nothing of the dead. It only reminded them that they had not been forgotten.

Here is what remains, and what you can still do:
Take grave dust in hand. Crouch before a decorative tombstone. And remain there, without a word, without a gesture, for as long as it takes.

Those who follow this gesture with respect become unseen by the undead - as long as they do not raise a hand against them first.

No name survived from that era. Not even that of the first Echo-Bearer.
And that, precisely, is what the Watchers had hoped for.
